Travelwish: Lapland

If you want to be assured of a white Christmas, then it might be wise to plan a short trip abroad during the upcoming holidays. Because with the Dutch weather you never know for sure. Browsing hotels.com I stumbled upon these three dream destinations in Lapland, which include all the ingredients for a wonderful (Christmas) holiday: rough landscapes, exciting ski and snow activities, and delicious Scandinavian food. A unique destination which deserves a place among our travel wishes.

Saariselkä

Saariselkä is a small but very charming village located in Urho Kekkonen National Park in northern Lapland. The beautiful lakes and wilderness make sure you can fully relax and enjoy your stay during the Christmas season. Saariselkä is situated 250 kilometers above the Arctic Circle and is located in a central Northern Light area. (Yes please! You know that I have become a big fan of the Northern Lights, haha.) Despite the fact that Saariselkä is located in a somewhat remote area, there is quite a lot to do. Apart from Santa’s spectacular resort in Kakslauttanen, the hometown of Santa Claus, which is less than 15 minutes away from downtown, Saariselkä also has several restaurants, bars and an indoor pool complex. So relaxing!

Jukkasjärvi

ice-hotel
The Ice Hotel in the Swedish part of Lapland has something to satisfy everyone’s desire for a real wintery Christmas scene. The hotel is constructed from snow and ice and during the winter holiday season surrounded by tons of decorated Christmas trees. The hotel is a true jewel in a unique environment and also from here you can see the Northern Lights. On Christmas day, tourists can even participate in the traditional torchlight procession and enjoy the Christmas concert in the village church. Cool!

Levi

Levi, one of the best and most beautiful resorts of Lapland, offers all the ingredients for a sporty and magical Christmas. Although sports is not really my thing, the scenery there is breathtaking and there is plenty of other options to entertain you. You can also do something more relaxing, namely: you can get pampered at Spa Hotel Levitunturi, which is a true oasis at the foot of the mountains. It is also possible to go for a walk to the city center to explore the festive market and the huge Christmas tree.
