Chanel no. 5

One of the most famous and best-selling perfumes of the world, Chanel Nº5, now has it’s own exhibition in Paris. Until June 5th, you can visit the Palais de Tokyo, where the famous fragrance is presented in her historical context.

A walk through a beautiful garden leads visitors onward to the exhibition entrance. The garden concept is a poetic evocation of Nº5 seen through the eyes of Piet Oudolf, who is know for projects like the High Line in New York and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London.

Chanel and the arts

The works of art, photographs, archives and objects exhibited provide an account of the many inspirations which fed the imagination and world of Mademoiselle Chanel, also know as Coco. Whether it be her favourite places or creations of her artist, poet and musician friends such as Pablo Picasso, Igor Stravinsky and Pierre Reverdy. Focusing on the long lasting attachments between Chanel and the arts, the exhibition seeks to reveal the timeless and iconic artistic essence of the Nº5 perfume.

The exhibition also displays iconic advertisements over the years and the testimonies of Chanel no. 5 admireres – from Marilyn Monroe that declared that sleeps “dressed” only in drop “Chanel Nº5” to today’s icons like Nicole Kidman and Brad Pitt.

Irma Boom, who received the prestigious Gutenberg Prize, has created a special edition book to go with this exhibition. The book is filled with images referring to Chanel Nº5 and quotations by Mademoiselle Chanel and other authors.
