Travelwish: Kalimantan

Anne’s last summer trip to Bali was already mentioned on the blog, but Indonesia has a lot more to offer for those interested in a great holiday destination. Take for example Kalimantan, the Indonesian portion of the island of Borneo, one of the most beautiful, diverse and unexplored islands of the country. If you embark on a journey through Kalimantan you will meet the indigenous people of the Dayak tribes, witness orangutans swinging in trees and most likely spot the funny proboscis monkeys. Moreover, the island is home to crocodiles, snakes, exotic birds, butterflies and fireflies. Kalimantan is not taken over by mass tourism, but this does not mean that there are no accommodation options. There’s a wide selection of hotels in Kalimantan, although a night in a tree house or on a boat in the jungle can also be an amazing experience.

Water world

Not for nothing is Kalimantan called “the land of the thousand rivers”, almost every town and village is built on the banks of the rivers. The rivers are used for transportation and trade of food and goods. The easiest and sometimes the only way to discover the villages is by boat. During a comfortable boat trip you can discover the local culture and the indigenous people who live in the rainforests. Wow, take me there pleaaaase?
